Overview
Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a student-centered, nationally recognized public research university, with expertise that benefits its region and spans the globe in a wide variety of fields, including the sciences, humanities, arts, business, engineering, education, health, and law. NIU offers more than 100 courses of study while serving a diverse and international student body of more than 16,000 through its main campus in DeKalb, Illinois, and education centers for students and working professionals in Chicago, Naperville, Oregon, and Rockford.


The Center for Black Studies (CBS) was established in 1971 as a hybrid (academic and student support services) program and is a unit of the Division of Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. CBS supports the mission of the university to promote excellence and engagement in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, artistry and outreach and service. The CBS houses offices for its professional staff, some student organizations, a computer lab and a SMART classroom. The Center for Black Studies works collaboratively with other cultural and academic centers across campus to acknowledge and affirm the intersecting identities of Black students, faculty, and staff. CBS professional staff and faculty at the Center are actively engaged in national organizations including, but not limited to, the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS), the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH), and the Association of Black Cultural Centers (ABCC).


The CBS has an academic program that offers a minor and certificate of undergraduate study in Black Studies, conducts research, and sponsors domestic and global study abroad experiences to study the history, culture and lived experiences of people of African descent. The Center compliments the Black Studies academic program with student-centered retention programs that promote Black students' success. In collaboration with student leaders, CBS staff sponsors lectures, workshops, conferences and leadership activities. The CBS plays an essential and unique role in advocating for Black students at NIU. The CBS staff also advises, mentors, and guides students and student organizations to enhance their campus experience. The Center supports recruitment efforts by hosting campus visits and opportunities for students to engage in community service/learning opportunities.
Position Summary
The CBS Program Manager must be well-versed in understanding The Center for Black Studies and understand how to lead and support programmatic initiatives that increase student engagement. They must also be able to assist with building the culture of The Center for Black Studies at NIU. This professional must also work closely with students, graduate assistants and CBS staff, and other members of the ADEI team and larger NIU community. Additionally, this position requires keeping daily operations running smoothly at all internal levels of the department. The individual in this position works under the supervision of the Center for Black Studies Co-Directors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Coordination - 35%
Provide detailed support for all staple CBS Programming.
Provide leadership for the development, administration of programs, and special projects.
Provide facilitation and execution of all CBS main events, including handling all detailed logistics including open house, BBQs, Pre-Kwanzaa, Black History Month, Black Graduation, with oversight provided by directors.
