The College of Lake County is looking for a LGBTQ+ Student Outreach & Programs Coordinator to join the Student Activities and Inclusion Department. Under the direction of the Director of Student Activities and Inclusion, the LGBTQ+ Student Outreach Coordinator is responsible for facilitation of co-curricular programs, multicultural competence, student leadership opportunities, and an overall campus climate that fosters student development for the LGBTQ+ community. The coordinator will develop and facilitate events, workshops and seminars that complement classroom instruction and help students build leadership and life skills (e.g., diversity, budget management, conflict resolution, etc.). This position will also assist in framing the diversity imperative in academic and educational terms to engage faculty and staff to move IDEA conversations to the center of institutional concerns to compliment the co-curricular experience to the work faculty are doing to engage students.

Required Qualification(s)

+ Bachelor’s Degree.

+ Knowledge and experience working with the LGBTQ+ community in a higher education setting.

+ Prior work experience in student affairs, student life programming, or a related field in a higher education setting.

+ Working knowledge of the entire Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.

+ Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential as this is a highly visible position with heavy public, student, agent and internal contact with faculty and staff.

+ Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Summary of Essential Functions

Project Leadership (50%)

+ Coordinate welcoming events/meet and greet sessions for new and continuing students

+ Assist with coordination and implementation of IDEA programs to encourage use of services

+ Co-host IDEA trainings and retreats that can serve as cross-functional opportunities with academic courses, such as first-year experience courses and those with direct learning outcomes

+ SAI lead to oversee PRIDE Month student events, Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience, World AIDS Day, and other LGBTQ+ initiatives.

+ Lead facilitator for SAFE Zone Training.

+ Facilitate the partnership between Student Activities and Inclusion and classroom instruction with intentional co-curriculum programming supporting course learning outcomes. Develop goals and means for reaching and maintaining faculty involvement in the co-curricular partnerships.

Department Operations and Procedures (30%)

+ Participate in campus diversity and heritage month planning committees.

+ Assist in the implementation IDEA workshops/training applicable to Student Activities and Inclusion, and related campus initiatives.

+ Research best practices in services for LGBTQ+ work to encourage program involvement

+ Assist in the development of an IDEA workshop/training manual and related program resources available during the academic year.

+ Promote LGBTQ+ programs through cross-functional campus teams or committees

+ Research best practices in services for target populations to encourage program involvement

+ Support other Student Activities and Inclusion programs.

+ Develop assessment techniques to determine success of established programs. Track participants progress and analyze results to recommend program improvements.

Student and Customer Service (20%)

+ Serve as a key liaison/contact to connect LGBTQ+ populations of students

+ Serve on the LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group, and the LGBTQ+ Students Advocates Committee on the Diversity Council

+ Serve as SAI liaison for the Pride Alliance student organization:

+ Provide guidance and leadership to PRIDE members through helping to develop leadership skills and responsibilities to execute various tasks.

+ Facilitate retreats and other workshop to develop academic year programs and student meetings

+ Developing partnerships with other clubs/organizations or college departments to execute various activities that address students’ needs.
