The Department of Animal Sciences operates our animal farms, laboratories, Feed Technology Center, meat and egg sales room, and other facilities to give students working experience in the field and to advance basic discovery and applied production research. Our farms operate on 1,300 acres, housing beef and dairy cattle, poultry, sheep, swine, and horses, and turning grain and forage into feed and bedding for our animals. And our facilities don't stop at the boundary of our Urbana campus; we maintain and study herds at research and Extension centers throughout Illinois.

SHORT DESCRIPTION SUMMARIZING POSITION

The Research Scientist will work closely with the PI to conduct research in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory at the University of Illinois.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Manage ongoing research projects including net energy projects, work with research managers and Graduate students to execute experiments.
  1. Prepare research proposals that will be submitted to external funding agencies
  1. Assist Graduate students with data summary, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
  1. Prepare publications from completed research projects that can be submitted to scientific journals for publication.
  1. Prepare presentations and present data at scientific meetings and at meetings with stakeholders.
  1. Collaborate with the PI to establish written research targets for the Laboratory.

Other duties as assigned to enhance the mission of the department.

Occasionally, work may be required during evenings and/or weekends. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

Required: PhD in Animal Sciences or related field.

Experience :

Required: Knowledge about nutrition research with pigs including knowledge about digestibility experiments. Experience working with indirect calorimetry to determine net energy values and greenhouse gas production from diets fed to pigs. Experience managing large data sets and conducting statistical analyses of large data sets. Experience working in a research setting including managing research employees and/or Graduate students. Proven track record for writing successful research proposals to granting agencies. Excellent written communication skills including experience in publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Preferred: Knowledge of managing a small staff of employees. Experience in laboratory analyses used in nutrition research. Willingness to learn.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong knowledge about feed ingredients used in diets for pigs and in searching the scientific literature for composition of feed ingredients. Detail oriented, organized, and ability to address multiple deadlines simultaneously. Excellent people skills and ability to work with graduate students, other employees, and staff. Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate with faculty, administrators, students, and staff.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS: This is a full-time, 100% academic professional appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary for this position is $80,000.
