The Department of Bioengineering in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Visiting Research Specialist position in Dr. Yang Liu's laboratory. The Visiting Research Specialist conducts research in cell and tissue staining and imaging, analyzes data, and reports on scientific experiments in a biomedical optical imaging laboratory. This position also manages laboratory supplies, operates advanced microscopy systems, and trains new students, while documenting protocols and ensuring laboratory safety and efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform data acquisition using different custom-built microscopy systems including phase imaging, super-resolution imaging system, and large-scale fluorescence imaging in a precise manner. Analyze data using custom-built software as instructed. Prepare data reports as requested and perform basic statistical analysis.
• Perform routine immunofluorescence or immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining of tissue and cells. Optimize the staining and tissue/cell processing protocols under the guidance of senior lab personnel. Prepare samples for lab members for system testing and biological studies. Write and maintain standard operating protocols and technical notes on sample preparation and operation of the instrument.
• Maintain cell cultures. Use various molecular biology and tissue/cell processing techniques including immunoblotting, tissue sectioning, tissue pathology, and cytology.
• Manage basic lab supplies, such as chemicals, reagents, and cryopreserved biological materials. Organize and maintain a list of biological samples from collaborators. Order new lab supplies when necessary. Work with the Division of Research Safety for inspection personnel and biosafety cabinet certification.
• Train new students at different levels (high school, undergraduate, and graduate) on the basic cell and tissue processing techniques.
• Assume additional appropriate related research duties to further the mission of the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, or a relevant field.
• 1 year hands-on experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, including cell culture and cell/tissue staining.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, or a relevant field.
• 2 years hands-on experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques including cell culture and cell/tissue staining, tissue sectioning.
• 2 years' experience in hands-on operation of advanced optical microscopes and sample preparations.
• Experience in optical microscopy and basic cell biology techniques (cell culture, fluorescence staining, IHC, immunofluorescence, and western blot).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• A consistent demonstration of reliability and responsibility in the workplace, such as delivery of results on schedule, strong scientific integrity, taking initiatives, and ability to multi-task
• Attention to detail
• Basic data analysis skills using MATLAB or Python
• Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a multidisciplinary team
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This position may become permanent at a later date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The minimum starting salary is $50,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis. Work authorization is not available for this position.
