Job Summary

The Director, Career Readiness is a key member of the Harris School of Public Policy's Career Development Office. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Professional & Career Development, the Director of Career Readiness provides leadership to ensure Harris graduate students have the necessary strategies to explore career options and develop career decision-making skills to identify opportunities that align with their career goals.

The Director of Career Readiness will supervise the Career Readiness team, which includes oversight of departmental career coaching strategies and resources for job search objectives for full-time positions and internships.

Responsibilities
  • Leads and manages day-to-day activities for 4-5 career coaches serving 1,200 full and part-time Harris Public Policy students as well as alumni.
  • Coaches domestic and international students on appropriate career management and job search skills in one-on-one, small, and large group settings.
  • Develop career-coaching initiatives including conceptualizing and planning seminars, and workshops on various topics (e.g. proactive job searches, interviewing techniques, career assessment, resume writing, and salary negotiations) for students.
  • Create and develop educational resources, programs, and special events to support the various career sectors of the Harris School.
  • Understands population needs and trends. Evaluates existing models for career coaching, programming and access to employment opportunities, e.g., campus recruiting, specialized / network-based search.
  • Design and manage student communication strategies, including collecting student data on summer internships and full-time jobs
  • Collaborate with the Employer Partnerships team which leads the employer outreach efforts and program planning within the private, nonprofit and government employment sectors.
  • Will work closely with a number of important internal and external groups including faculty, students, employers, and alumni to achieve the goals of Career Development.
  • Solicits and analyzes student feedback and evaluations and strategizes with Career Development team, student organizations, or other Harris staff, to determine program offerings and innovations.
  • Keeps abreast of market trends as they relate to the job search processes around key sectors of interest to constituents.
  • Oversee the management of a variety of career systems and platforms
  • Manages employees by establishing annual performance goals, allocating resources, assessing annual performance, and determining individual merit, incentive and/or promotional increases.
  • Develops new and current programs, such as on-campus recruiting events and career management programs, to support students and alumni in post-graduate planning and career pursuits.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree.

Experience:
  • Industry experience in one or more of the following: Consulting, Public Finance, Finance, Energy and Environmental Policy, Healthcare Policy, Housing Policy, Education Policy, International Development, International Relations, Social Enterprise, Technology and Innovation, and Social Entrepreneurship.

Preferred Competencies
  • Knowledge of the job search process and understanding of the role of internships and full-time recruitment strategies of the nonprofit, government and private sectors related to public policy.
  • Workshop development, presentation, coaching, and networking skills.
  • Project or event management skills.
  • People development, building a collaborative team environment and engaging and inspiring staff members to reach or exceed individual and team goals.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the needs and concerns of international students.
  • Deep commitment to customer service, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and diplomatically with students and colleagues.
  • Strong written, verbal, and analytical skills.

Working Conditions:
  • Work, in-person, at the Keller Center in Hyde Park, Chicago.
  • This position is currently expected to work a minimum three days per week in the office.
  • Evening or weekend work may be required based on student needs and recruiting activities.
  • Some travel.
