Job Summary
The Director of Sports Medicine is a full-time, 12-month position responsible for coordinating the evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for varsity student athletes. The position reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Finance.
Responsibilities
- Prevention, evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries and illness. Collaborate with physicians and health team members to develop and implement comprehensive prevention and rehabilitation programs.
- Management of athletic training rooms and coordination of medical coverage for athletic events.
- Supervise and mentor the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellows and Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellows.
- Recruit, educate and oversee hiring of student workers.
- Record keeping and documentation using the Athletic Trainer Software.
- Impact baseline and post injury tracking; and communicates with coaches, athletes, and physicians on results and rehab planning.
- Assist with insurance claims forms.
- Promotes the professional growth of staff through coaching, mentoring and support.
- Develops and implements best practices and developing at-risk metrics.
- Develops policies and procedures related to Athletic Trainer operations.
- Uses best practices and knowledge of internal or external University issues to improve products and services.
- Acts as a resource for colleagues.
- Assume the role of the University's allied HealthCare mentor.
- Collaborates with a variety of individuals, including the sports medicine staff, coaches, administrators, and various offices on campus providing wellness events and services.
- Supervise scheduling and documentation of physicians' dictations for the weekly injury clinic.
- Uses best practices and knowledge to guide all aspects of the varsity intercollegiate athletic training program with a minimal level of direction. Develops and implements new wellness initiatives.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:
- Masters degree.
- A degree from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited athletic training program.
Experience:
- Minimum 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Licenses and Certifications:
- National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) certification.
- Minimum BLS Instructor certification from American Red Cross (ARC).
- Able to assume Administrator role for ARC LTP Agreement.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/AED PR) or BLS CPR/AED certification.
- Eligible to obtain an Illinois Athletic Trainer licensure.
- Manuel Therapies training.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
- Proficient in computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite and other software.
Preferred Competences
- Ability to organize and prioritize work, take initiative, resolve problems, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Basic knowledge of and commitment to NCAA DIII rules including sports medicine best practices.
- Excellent communication skills: listening, verbal, written, and interpersonal.
- Ability to set annual goals and work towards achieving them.

- Flexible hours including early mornings and evenings.
- Ability to bend, crouch or stoop.
- Carry or lift loads and push/pull objects of up to 80 lbs.
- Use computers extensively for 2 - 4 hours.
