This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. Pay for this position will be $53.99 per hour. Rate is determined by collective bargaining agreement.
Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of skilled tasks proficiently in the maintenance and repair of university security access systems as well as occasional work relating to the carpentry trade. Manages all shop-related work and personnel associated with the maintenance, upkeep, and renewal of the Chicago campus buildings' which includes the rebuild and installation of locks, doorknobs, door closers, panic hardware, related mechanical equipment and door hardware. May repair steel doors, hinges, desk, file cabinet and office furniture locks...Coordinates and implements various maintenance and related projects which includes estimating scope and costs and supervising multiple crews.Provides direction to staff with responsibility for managing and evaluating performance.Ensures timely completion of all shop-related paperwork and electronic approvals including service requests and timesheets. Cultivates good customer relations.

Specific Responsibilities:
Maintains repairs, rebuilds and installs locks, doorknobs, door closes, panic hardware, related mechanical equipment and door hardware. May repair steel doors, hinges, desk, file cabinet and office furniture locks. Programs and maintains electronic access systems
Organizes work for the planned and unscheduled maintenance tasks directed to the Lock Shop staff for efficient and effective performance.
Maintains and updates records for security systems including key and combination codes both written and computerized.
Performs master system coding, cylinder combination setups, and multi-combination set-ups.
Maintains good order and discipline among personnel consistent with university and departmental policies, initiating commendatory or corrective action as appropriate.
Performs some carpentry tasks necessary in the repair of security devices and door hardware.(secondary task)
Identifies and recommends employee safety, technical, soft-skill training, and professional development opportunities as required to ensure optimum unit performance and development.
Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)
High school diploma or equivalent combination of educational training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
Minimum two (2) or more years of supervisory experience in planning, directing, and coordinating shop-related work or (1) year of supervisory experience in planning, directing, and coordinating shop-related work and a general knowledge of Northwestern's maintenance and renewal procedures'
Experience in maintenance and repair of security systems at the journeyman level, with relevant work experience of five (5) years or more.
Experience with electronic security systems and data communication.
Good working, state-of-the-art knowledge of methods, procedures and tools used in the maintenance, repair and coding of security systems.
Ability to maintain organized electronic and written records.
Ability to maintain confidential and classified security data information.
Ability to effectively communicate with the university community at all levels and maintain good customer relations.
Ability to use independent judgment with minimal direct supervision.
Be a member of Laborers Local 681 or join after one month of employment.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Thorough knowledge of the tools, application methods and standard trade safety practices.
Complete knowledge of the proper handling, mixing and disposal of toxic or potentially hazardous materials.
Excellent written & oral communications & listening skills.
Exceptional customer relationship skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to effectively motivate work groups toward defined and agreed upon common goals.
Ability to perform calculations applicable to field of experience.
