The Steam & Power Plant III position is the NIU Heating Plant's Stationary Engineer position. This position is essential to the operation, maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance of the University's HVAC, environmental control, and water systems for all of NIU's facilities.
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Chief Plant Operating Engineer and the direct supervision of the Lead Plant Stationary Engineer, this position performs duties necessary to operate and maintain the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and all other mechanical equipment on campus. Duties must be performed competently in routine as well as emergency situations as this is the essential service of the university.
Flexibility in work shifts will be a requirement due to the 24/7/365 nature of this department's essential service to the University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facilities Maintenance and Repair
Performing Preventative Maintenance tasks for buildings across campus.
Make routine rounds by checking air handling units, pumps, valves and controls to make sure the performance is at normal operating levels for said equipment as well as monitoring the buildings through a BAS (Building Automation System).
Repair and replace parts such as seals, packing and bearings in pumps and HVAC units.
HVAC Calibrations and Adjustments
Perform duties and work of adjusting and maintaining controls on HVAC equipment.
Control temperatures of buildings by adjusting and maintaining (calibrating) thermostats.
Check relative humidity of rooms along with ventilating systems.
Maintain high-pressure steam lines and cover all steam plant emergencies.
On The Job Training
Responsible for administering training to lower classifications when the need/opportunity arises; required to assist in any difficulties pertaining to the duties of a S&PP I or S&PP II.
Facilities Repairs Coordination and Strategy
Performing various duties involving co-collaborative work with other trades on mechanical equipment and/or infrastructure repairs.
Other Miscellaneous Tasks
Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in the maintenance and operation of steam and power plant equipment.
3. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in a position comparable to the Steam and Power Plant II.
4. Possession of current/valid State of Illinois Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair, and maintenance; power plant equipment, steam-generating equipment, and pollution-control devices.
Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote the effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
Knowledge of steam and power plant operations.
