The Steam & Power Plant II is the Heating Plant Department's High Pressure Steam Boilers Operator for NIU. This position is the 2nd in this Civil Service Classification Series Promotional Line.
Position Summary
This position performs duties necessary to operate and maintain high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment needed to provide heating and cooling demands for the university. Duties must be performed safely and competently in routine as well as emergency situations as this is the essential service of the university. Flexibility in work shifts will be a requirement due to the 24/7/365 nature of this department's essential service to the University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Steam Power Plant Operation & Testing


Maintain records on the operation after reading and comprehending the State Water Survey Manual as well as other manuals.
Test boiler water, treating the boiler water with needed chemicals using extreme caution at all times while handling these chemicals as well as following established safety procedures.
Keep chemical tanks filled and make needed adjustments to feed water and chemical pumps.


Steam Power Plant Operation & Documentation


Perform duties to operate high pressure boilers safely and efficiently.
Must check gauges and log the boilers regularly.

Steam Power Plant Operations


Keep boiler room clean by sweeping and mopping as often as needed to keep boiler room and the shop area clean.
Keep boiler room safe by picking up and storing all equipment properly.
Maintain other auxiliary equipment in the plant as well as answer the telephone and relay messages in a courteous, professional and timely manner.

Steam Power Plant Operation & Production


Regenerate water softeners as needed and make sure brine tank has proper amount of salt and water.

Steam Power Plant Operation & Maintenance


Check and adjust continuous and manual blow down valves.
Perform maintenance and preventive maintenance on high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment.

Steam Power Plant Maintenance


Clean boilers inside and out, including mud and steam drums.

Steam Power Plant Additional Duties


Perform miscellaneous, related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
High school diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in a position comparable to the Steam and Power Plant I.
Possession of valid/current licenses and certificates, as required by the employing institution.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair, and maintenance; power plant equipment, steam-generating equipment, and pollution-control devices.
Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote the effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
