Description
This is an academic position in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The incumbent in this position serves as a physician assistant in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and shall report directly to Traves Crabtree, MD, Chairman of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
 Examples of Duties
I. Administration 10%

A. Represent the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in relevant hospital and university matters.

B. Represent the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at national and statewide meetings.

C. Coordinate activities as requested to support the development of programs within the Division.

II. Teaching 10%

A. Provide instruction to medical students and residents relative to cardiothoracic surgery.

B. Provide presentations within the medical school and/or hospitals on clinical topics as requested.

C. Assist with continuing education programs in cardiothoracic surgery.

D. Provide training and instruction to affiliated hospital personnel on procedures in cardiothoracic surgery.

E. Provide instruction to students in Physician Assistant Programs from surrounding areas.

III. Research 10%

A. Conduct data collection for retrospective and prospective research studies.

B. Assist in clinical studies in Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

IV. Service 70%

A. Ward duties including: Admission work ups, history and physical exams, making rounds and completing progress notes, dictating discharge summaries, seeing patients in the clinic, managing patients pre and postop including giving orders (written, verbal, telephone).

B. Surgical duties including: 1st and 2nd assist in the OR, vein harvesting, wound and chest closure.

C. Other technical duties including: Performing thoracentesis, IV insertion, insertion and removal of central lines, catheters, chest tubes, arterial lines, and IABP.

D. Other duties including: Assisting in research projects and writing research papers.

 


Qualifications

Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
Successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program or physician assistant program
Passing score on national certifying examination
Licensed in the State of Illinois (or eligible for licensure)
