What you’ll be doing

CIBC Bank USA is hiring a Bank Paralegal (Legal Process) to join its Legal Department. The Bank Paralegal (Legal Process) is responsible for working in collaboration with internal legal counsel, external counsel, and a small team of other paralegals to process a variety of legal orders and notices received from governmental and private parties, relating to CIBC and/or its commercial and consumer clients. These orders and notices may include, for example, subpoenas, civil investigative demands, garnishments, levies, citations to discover assets, summons, and notices of mechanic’s liens. As a member of the CIBC Bank USA Legal Process team, this Paralegal plays a vital role in making sure that these items are promptly responded to in compliance with applicable laws. The successful candidate for this position will work well as a team member in a fast-paced environment, be detailed-oriented, and take initiative to increase knowledge in areas relevant to the role.

The team member will need to be on-site in our Chicago Loop offices to receive the deliveries of legal orders and notices that take place throughout the day, whether through the US mail, courier services, or personal service; scan these items; and email them to other team members.

This role is based in Chicago, at CIBC Bank USA’s headquarters at 120 South LaSalle Street. This role has an expected salary range of $60,000-80,000, based on experience and qualifications. The successful candidate also may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.

Key r esponsibilities

+ Receive, scan, and deliver items at our office location in Chicago’s Loop (120 South LaSalle Street)

+ Process all types of legal orders and notices that come in to the Legal Process team, such as subpoenas, levies, garnishments, citations to discover assets, bankruptcy notices, notices of mechanic’s liens, notices relating to eminent domain, and court orders

+ Takeall necessary steps to carry out this processing, including, for example, accessing CIBC systems to obtain needed information on client profiles and client accounts, such as transaction histories; interfacing with relationship managers and operations personnel; drafting, editing, and sending client notification letters; and documenting within team systems all orders received and their dispositions

+ Interface with internal and external parties in a professional and efficient manner to ensure that questions are accurately and timely answered, all legal and procedural requirements are complied with, and both CIBC and US Legal are appropriately represented

+ Actindependently and proactively and takes responsibility for identifying and resolving issues, including errors in processing, changes in law or policy, and needs for updates or changes to team procedures

+ Take accountability for professional development, including identifying gaps in knowledge and taking steps to close those gaps

Qualifications

+ Undergraduate degree and/or paralegal certificate

+ Experience in, or ability to quickly learn, the following: processing legal orders, such as subpoenas, civil investigative demands, citations to discover assets, garnishments, and levies, including reviewing for proper service of process; conducting document production, including reviewing documents for relevance and privilege and creating privilege logs; e-discovery; filing responses in federal, state, and local court systems

+ Ability to learn to identify and understand documents commonly generated and handled by financial institutions, and common types of legal orders and notices

+ Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, litigation and collection processes

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills, including use of accurate grammar, spelling, and professional titles

+ Strong skills in using Adobe, scanning technology, and the Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint)

+ Solid critical thinking skills

+ Robust work ethic

+ Interest in learning the business of a financial institution and related impact on legal risks
