SALARY

$105,000 – $115,000

POSITION SUMMARY

Coordinates the activities of personnel involved in designing and overseeing capital construction and facility projects. Collaborates with various groups, including but not limited to, Capital Improvements, Construction, Facilities Maintenance, and consultants to develop and maintain CTA facilities.

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Performs project management tasks for various mechanical engineering projects.

+ Determines objectives and requirements, organizes programs and projects, and develops standards and guidelines for the Authority’s mechanical, plumbing, and vertical transportation systems.

+ Assists with planning, developing, and administering the capital and operating budgets and programs for the Authority’s mechanical, plumbing, and vertical transportation systems.

+ Assists engineering personnel in engineering design and in project management of improvements and additions to mechanical, plumbing, and vertical transportation systems.

+ Coordinates the activities of Mechanical Engineers and Mechanical Interns in the preparation of proposals, studies, reports, and schedules.

+ Develops scope of work for consultants and participates in consultant selection. Coordinates production of drawings and specifications for mechanical, plumbing, and vertical transportation projects with outside consultants and contractors and with Authority personnel.

+ Conducts field inspections of construction projects to determine status of work and ensure compliance with project design and specifications.

+ Conducts witness testing on site and at manufacturer’s factory.

+ Assists in the evaluation of professional staff.

+ Performs related duties as assigned.

+ Identifying, assessing, and incorporating new methods, materials, and technologies.

+ Creatively utilizing talents of Mechanical Engineers

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

+ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, plus 10 years of experience relating to Mechanical Engineering and Vertical Transportation Engineering, or an equivalent combination of training and experience relating to this position.

+ Registered Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) and Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification.

+ Design experience in lieu of PE registration will be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

+ Requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time and constantly operating a computer and other office productivity machinery.

+ Requires moving long distances, stooping, and ascending/descending ladders or objects in order to investigate systems.

+ Service Area Requirement: Exempt (Non-Union) employees must live within the boundaries of the CTA Statutory Service Area either at the time of employment or within 6 months of beginning employment at CTA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

+ Detailed knowledge in utilizing design software including passenger traffic analysis and simulation (ELEVATE), CADD, and BIM.

+ Working knowledge of general mechanical engineering and vertical transportation principles, methods, and techniques.

+ Working knowledge of related building codes and guidelines, including environmental and energy guidelines, City of Chicago building codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) guidelines.

+ Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, methods, and techniques.

+ Ability to apply engineering knowledge to complex mechanical engineering problems.

+ Working knowledge of mechanical components, methods, and techniques.

+ Working knowledge of municipal codes and ordinances as applied to the design, development, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment.

+ Advanced math skills including Algebra, Calculus and Geometry.

+ Advanced skill using AutoCAD.

+ Strong research, attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

+ Good verbal and written communication skills.

+ Good surveying skills.

+ Good critical thinking skills.

+ Intermediate skill using personal computer, engineering applications, databases and data management software.

WORKING CONDITIONS

+ General office environment

+ Works outdoors, in or near station/terminal/shop/garage areas and on elevated, ballasted, and subway track areas adjacent to and energized contact rails and moving trains.

+ Travels within the Chicago Metropolitan area and occasionally required to travel to other locations in North America.

+ May be required to work various extended or irregular hours (including evenings, nights, & weekends) in order to meet project deadlines or respond to CTA emergencies.

+ Computer systems and software, technical manuals, and field equipment

+ National, state, and local codes, standards, and technical literature

Additional Details: Employees and/or union members will be given priority consideration in the hiring process, per the applicable labor contracts.

Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate and may be higher or lower than target.
