Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications


Overview
The Office of Military and Veteran Services serves as a liaison between the Department of Veteran Affairs and the military-connected students at Northern Illinois University. As advocates for the academic success of our students, we work tirelessly to create pathways to our student's goals. We encourage our military-connected students to engage and embrace every opportunity to connect with the Huskie Experience. Our students are veterans, reservists/guard and dependents (spouses/children). All our welcome in our lounge space to interact or to simply have a place to study.
Position Summary
The Director of Military, Veteran, and Off-Campus Student Services, within the Division of Student Affairs, provides overall leadership for programming related to these student populations. The Director is a key campus partner and liaison to various on-campus offices and off-campus resources that assist in the recruitment, retention, and sense of belonging of military, veteran, and off-campus students. Responsibilities include but are not limited to strategic planning, supervision, program development, implementation, and evaluation, and administrative oversight of resources and service management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Programmatic Planning - 20%
Provide direction in the planning, implementation, and assessment of all programmatic efforts, focusing on programs that contribute to a barrier-free transition and sense of belonging and community at NIU.
Provide direct assistance to military-affiliated students who wish to use benefits, connecting with appropriate offices such as financial aid, academic assistance, and departments as needed.


Supervision - 20%
Direct staffing by overseeing staff recruitment efforts; training and development; division of workload for professional, paraprofessional, graduate, interns, and student staff; and facilitating staff meetings, evaluation, and professional development as necessary and appropriate.
Oversee the student veteran and commuter students' lounges.

Administration and Operations - 10%
Develop and administer all departmental fiscal aspects including but not limited to budgets and allocation of resources and develop and administer departmental policies and procedures.
Pursue and secure external funding specifically for constituencies as appropriate and necessary.

Strategic Planning - 10%
Create effective and strategic partnerships with various University offices and other internal and external constituencies concerned with the development and success of military, veteran, and off-campus students.
Serve as the primary spokesperson and consultant for initiatives related to these specialized student populations.
Pursuant to Public Act 096-0133/Higher Education Veterans Services Act, this position serves as the Coordinator of Veterans and Military Personnel Services, and a point of contact for referral to academic and financial advising, and other campus support services.

Assessment - 10%
Develop and implement annual and on-going department evaluation and assessment practices, including but not limited to internal/external reviews.
Leads efforts related to Veterans Administration audits.

Recruitment and Retention Strategies - 10%
Coordinate and/or participate in cross-functional departmental advisory boards and committees as needed to ensure campus-wide collaborative efforts that promote a welcoming campus community to recruit and retain military, veteran, and off-campus students.
