Job Description

Affiliated Engineers, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II based in Chicago, IL. This individual will be responsible for the following duties:

 

·       Develop and review options for system routing and equipment room layouts. Provide calculations to size the mechanical equipment, get equipment selections, and coordinate with other trades to optimize general layout.

·       Review engineering/system calculations and sizing of system components done by Engineer I and perform calculations on an as-needed basis.

·       Edit design specifications and use effective writing skills to prepare meeting notes. Review responses to Requests for Information (RFIs) incorporating information from project documents, specifications, shop drawings and design criteria.

·       Review shop drawing submittals from Interns, Designer I, Designer II, and Engineer I.

·       Perform quality review of work by Interns, Designer I, Designer II, and Engineer I. Participate in additional quality efforts as assigned.

·       Research applicable codes to make informed design decisions based on project location and project type.

·       Serve as face-to-face contact for external partners. Read and direct relevant project correspondence from internal and external partners.

·       Independently develop basis of design, load calculations, and equipment selection within client deadlines by balancing multiple priorities, projects and responding to changes in deadline, scope, and design as they occur.

·       Establish criteria for distribution systems conforming to appropriate standards.

·       Work with equipment suppliers/vendors as necessary for equipment selection.

·       Provide feedback and serve as pilot users with the custom development team to advance discipline practices, processes and tools, including new proprietary design software. Help train staff during rollout of new software.

·       Serve as project manager as assigned on specific projects, including handling financials, working with team leads to staff project, and managing project timelines with external partners and internal teams.

·       Delegate work, identify specific tasks, and balance work for BIM Staff, Interns, Designer I, Designer II and Engineer I in order to meet client demands and project deadlines. Review work for completeness and accuracy.

·       Work with outside consultants, client and owner to ensure the goals of the project are met.

 

The job involves up to 20% domestic travel.

Minimum requirements: Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Energy Engineering and 2 years of mechanical engineering experience. Alternatively, employer will accept a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Energy Engineering and 4 years of mechanical engineering experience. The following specific experience is also required:

-       2 years of high-performance building performance design experience, including renewable and alternative energy strategies, computational fluid dynamics, embodied energy/carbon, indoor environmental quality, material composition, water efficiency, life cycle assessment, and environment planning experience;

-       2 years of experience using load calculation software including DOE-2 (eQUEST) or Trace;

-       2 years of experience in each of the following rating systems and design codes and standards: international code council, LEED, and ASHRAE;

-       2 years of experience using building information modeling (BIM) software (REVIT MEP) for building system modeling and coordination with Navisworks software.

-       2 years of experience writing construction specifications including CSI Division 20 and Division 23.
