Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY

Reporting to the Endoscopy Manager, assists the physician in the performance of general and advanced interventional endoscopic procedures; provides equipment, specimen handling, and other technical support. Responsible for room set up prior to procedures and clean up following procedures. The Endoscopy Technician II works under the direction and supervision of the MD or RN.

II. REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS:

Assists the physician in the performance of advanced, interventional endoscopic patient procedures according to established standards; works along side the physician and provides all appropriate supplies, equipment, and instrumentation. Assists the physician with endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration; sets up ultrasound system and specialty scopes; uses computer system to label and measure tumors of the GI tract, liver, pancreas and lung; assist the physician and cytologist with the fine needle aspiration, which removes tumor cells for diagnoses. Assists with ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) procedures including stent placement, balloon extraction of biliary stones, use of sphincterotomy equipment used to cut/cauterize during sphincterotomy, use of baskets during stone extraction. Assist with Endo Mucosal Resection (EMR) procedures; trouble shoots specialty scopes; sets up and runs a c-arm during fluoroscopy procedures. Assist with the Barrx ablation and Bravo pH procedures. Follows physician's instructions for performing all required patient diagnostic procedures utilizing appropriate instrumentation. Obtains various specimens from patients. Safely handles, documents, and places specimens in appropriate containers/solutions per standards. Attends in-services related to skills/techniques required for interventional procedures. Verifies required pictures have been taken by physician. Performs all the duties of the Endoscopy Tech I including assisting the physician with general endoscopic procedures.

Sets up procedure room; identifies and selects the specialty equipment, supplies, and instrumentation required for each procedure based on awareness of the room environment, the needs of the patient and physician, and the nature of the procedure to be performed. Inputs appropriate patient data in endoscopic information system.

Cleans procedure room upon the completion of procedures; performs gross decontamination of instruments; transports instrumentation to the proper decontamination room; wipes down counters and other work areas according to proper asceptic procedures. Transports medications, which are not controlled substances.

Properly cares for and handles instruments and equipment; uses and maintains instrument and equipment in a cost-effective manner. Inspects and cares for instrumentation and equipment to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Charts instrument and equipment maintenance records and sends damaged equipment out for repair.

Draws up medications and labels syringes under the supervision of the MD or RN.

Assists in procedure room turnover ensuring accurate identification of patient. Transports patient to correct procedure room and from various areas of the hospital. Assists in the lifting and/or transferring of patients to and from exam tables, wheelchairs, carts, and beds.

Responsible for intraoperative documentation into EPIC which includes documenting in and out times of intraoperative staff, recording event times and supplies used.

Supports anesthesiologist with obtaining necessary supplies to manage patient airway.

Performs the duties of the Patient Care Tech as required.

Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

III. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with hospital staff and physicians.

The organizational skills necessary to prioritize responsibilities and duties so they are performed in a proficient manner.

The analytical skills necessary to assess and respond to physician, staff, and patient needs.

Strong communication skills with clear understanding of medical terminology and the ability to respond quickly and appropriately to physician requests.

The ability to retain professionalism and remain calm and poised in difficult situations.

Proficient computer skills necessary to measure tumors and respond quickly to requests for information during endoscopic procedures.

Solid Endoscopy Tech I technical skills with the ability to perform the competencies of the Endoscopy Tech II.

The ability to work a flexible schedule and be on-call for emergencies.
