Job Summary

The Engine Service Officer, Office is responsible for training, supervising, and coaching Locomotive Engineers (LEs) and Student LEs on locomotive operations, as well as training handling and general locomotive engineer responsibilities. In addition, the position reviews and captures downloads for any train delay issues such as crossing incidents and trains going into emergency to help resolve the root cause. The position monitors fuel conservation from engines idling to throttle restrictions.

Main Responsibilities

Training LEs

· Train, supervise, and coach LEs and Student LEs in train handling and general locomotive engineer responsibilities

· Review Locomotive Event Recorders (LER), Distributed Power (DP), Trip Optimizer (TO), and other technologies at CN

· Contribute to the student locomotive on-the-job training, and evaluation check rides

· Perform annual and triennial evaluations rides pertaining to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations on locomotive engineers and counsel over telephone as well as voice radio

· Help train LEs on new technologies that are introduced

· Develop and sustain the right employee behaviors with feedback, recognition, reinforcement, and coaching

· Make recommendations on cost control and asset utilization in planning and execution of training

Analyze and Interpret LER Data

· Obtain, analyze, and interpret LER data for accident and incident investigations, train separations, train stalls and any other train delay issues as well as for fuel conservation expectations for trains and idling locomotives

· Monitor LEs and crew performance as well as productivity analysis

· Utilize other CN computer systems such as Wi-Tronix, Service Reliability System (SRS), Crew Assignment Timekeeping System (CATS), Real-Time Business Intelligence (RTBI), and Train Operation Planning and Control (TOPC) to support LER and Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR) analysis process

· Resolve performance as displayed by LER data, including other information and observations

Planning and Supporting Engine Service Officer Duties

· Maintain Locomotive Engineer Trainee (LET) training records

· Maintain records regarding train separations such as analyze records, study trends, and make recommendations to reduce separations

· Study new locomotive technologies and help develop job aids, training material, and courses for LEs regarding those new technologies

Provide Guidance to Divisional Officers

· Provide guidance and assistance to Divisional Officers on the locomotive operation, train handling matters, and LE’s role and concerns

· Interact and make recommendations to Transportation Managers, General Managers, Senior Vice President (VP), Rail Traffic Control (RTC) Centre personnel, Crew Management Centre (CMC) Centre personnel, Labor Relations, and Risk Management

· Interact and make recommendations about safety critical cases of network disruption, locomotive system failures, and accidents as well as incidents

· Share best practices, information, and operational concerns

· Collaborate with Operating Practices on revisions required to Air Brake and Train Handling Manual, Distributed Power Operating Guide, Trip Optimizer Operating Guide, General Operating Instructions, and any other rules or regulations involving train handling, locomotive operations, and air brakes functions

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee will spend extended hours in front of a computer screen. The role requires minimal travel (up to 5%) and must be able to travel to both the United States (U.S.) and Canada.

Requirements

Experience

Locomotive Engineer

· Minimum 3 years of experience as a certified Locomotive Engineer

Education/Certification/Designation

· High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

· LE certification in the U.S.

· Valid Driver’s License

· Certified in the United States Operating Rules (USOR) and Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)

· Advanced knowledge of Operating Rules and Regulations

· Knowledge of LER and LDVR operation and computer

· Knowledge of freight cars and locomotive air brakes

· Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

· Knowledge of Train Marshalling and DP Placement Rules

· Fluently bilingual, both written and verbal (English, French)*
