The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. ISAS is seeking to hire an Associate Research Scientist, Archaeology to plan and conduct all levels of archaeological investigations (including geophysical surveys), coordinate and conduct analysis of recovered materials, and prepare descriptive and interpretive reports. Position is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform and oversee the analysis of recovered archaeological data and provide interpretations of findings.
Author compliance reports in accordance with state and federal laws and author and edit technical chapters or volumes for the Survey, the state of Illinois, and funding agencies.
Perform quality assurance/quality control through reviewing data and reports.
Function as field director for major field geophysical and/or analytical undertakings.
Develop and submit research/grant proposals that conform to the mission of ISAS and PRI.
Coordinate field investigations with landowners, contracting and regulatory agencies, construction firms, University administration, and Survey staff.
Lead field crews and field schools conducting archaeology in conjunction with ISAS and other institutions.
Ensure the safety of staff and equipment.
Serve as co-principal and/or principal investigator and perform tasks in that capacity including management of grant funding and production of project, grant, or contract reports and deliverables.
Perform care and maintenance of the ISAS geophysical equipment and related software programs.
Serve as point of contact for sponsor, respond to sponsor inquiries and needs, and coordinate staff activities with sponsor.
Plan and coordinate Special Projects and field station staff and travel for geophysical surveys.
Mentor staff to achieve success and foster a culture of innovation and high-level performance at both individual and organizational levels.
Respond to requests for information and provide technical expertise to PRI staff, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academia, industry, and the general public.
Contribute to education and outreach goals of the Survey, PRI, the University of Illinois, and the state of Illinois.
Serve on Survey and PRI committees as needed.
Attend, participate in, and contribute to meetings, conferences, and workshops.
Participate in a leadership role in professional organizations, serve as peer-reviewer for professional journals.
Communicate results of investigations as presentations and lectures to a wide variety of audiences in a variety of venues including public lectures and meetings, short courses, field trips, professional organization conferences and meetings, and academic or research seminars.
Enhance the reputation of the Survey and PRI at the state, national, and international level.
Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, or closely related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. At least five years' experience in the archaeology or precontact history of the American Midwest or Mid-South. Experience working with scientific collections, including archaeological collections. Experience producing text, tables, and figures for scientific publications and data reports. Valid driver's license. Preferred Qualifications: Experience engaging Indigenous scholarship in eastern North America. Experience supervising geophysical surveys and/or analyzing geophysical data. Experience working with geographic information systems and high-accuracy global positioning instruments. Registered Professional Archaeologist.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Required: Familiarity with state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations. Familiarity with working with large archaeological collections. Ability to effectively acquire and manage project funds and resources. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Affinity for cooperative or interdisciplinary research with scientists at the Survey, professionals at other Surveys or other academic units, as well as governmental agencies and other academic institutions. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases. Preferred: Familiarity with state of Illinois historic preservation, burial laws, and regulations. Familiarity with the culture history of Illinois and the Midwest/Mid-South.

Work Environment: Work is conducted in both office and field settings. Fieldwork will require working in adverse conditions (inclement weather, biting insects, remoteness) and occasional travel (including driving to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois in both rural and urban settings. Will require overnight travel for up to one work week at a time. Will require operating, lifting, and manipulating field equipment and other items over uneven terrain weighing up to 50 pounds.

Appointment Information: This is a full-time academic professional appointment. The starting date is negotiable. The budgeted amount for this position is $80,000 to $100,000. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for a position.
