JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

ASSOCIATE STAFF ATTORNEY (LABOR LAW FOCUSED)

Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (“BACP”)

Number of Vacancies: 1

Under direction, performs professional legal work related to sections of the Municipal Code of Chicago enforced by BACP and provides legal counsel to BACP on matters that affect the department’s operations. This position will focus on enforcement of the City’s consumer and worker protection ordinances. They will also divide their work time between multiple office locations. The Associate Staff Attorney will:

+ Work closely with BACP Office of Labor Standards (“OLS”) management and investigators on Domestic Worker Contract, Fair Workweek, Minimum Wage, Paid Leave and Paid Sick Leave, Wage Theft, and other labor and consumer fraud related cases

+ Prosecute OLS and consumer fraud cases at the Department of Administrative Hearings (“DOAH”)

+ Negotiate and review settlement agreements for OLS cases

+ Prosecute BACP and Chicago Police Department citations related to BACP ordinances issued to businesses

+ Review and interpret various documents (e.g., requests for information, license requirements, legislation) for department managers

+ Attend outreach events and facilitate meetings

+ Train and consult with BACP investigators and CPD officers regarding new and existing ordinances and evidentiary requirements necessary to support enforcement

+ Train law clerks and oversee their day-to-day assignments

+ Review consumer disclosure documents for Municipal Code compliance and review confiscated evidence to determine destruction date

+ Perform related duties as required

Work Location: Various- DOAH (400 West Superior Street), BACP’s City Hall (121 North LaSalle Street)

and Ogden (2350 West Ogden Avenue) offices

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30AM to 4:30PM

Salary: $73,800/year

Qualifications

This position requires graduation from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school and admission to the Illinois Bar.

Selection Criteria

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

+ Previous experience in the legal profession

+ Previous experience working with government agencies as a licensed attorney or while licensed under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711

+ Previous clerkship or externship in a government environment

+ Previous experience with labor law

+ Previous experience with consumer fraud law

+ Previous experience with a high-volume court room environment

+ Experience with online and database research

+ Experience working with the public

+ Ability to speak, read, and/or write fluently in any other language than English

If an individual is still in the Reserve or National Guard, a letter from the Commanding Officer, Unit Representative, or Personnel Staff Officer (S-1) stating the individual is serving in “good standing” and has completed their first term of their initial contract. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates must answer “yes” to the question on the online application that asks, “Have you been discharged or released therefrom the United States Armed Forces under Honorable Discharge or General Discharge (Under Honorable Conditions) OR have you completed the term of your initial contract as a Reservist or member of the National Guard and are actively serving in good standing AND do you wish to be considered for a Veteran’s preference in hiring with the understanding that you must provide required documentation at the onboarding stage AND if you cannot produce the required verification your conditional offer may be revoked?” In addition, you must provide documentation to verify your military service at the time of on-boarding. Veterans who claim Veteran’s preference must submit the following at the time of onboarding: DD214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that must show the Veterans’ character of service upon discharge.
