About the Department

The GenForward Survey was founded and is led by Professor Cathy J. Cohen in the
Departments of Political Science and Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity at the University of
Chicago.

Job Summary

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate on research design for projects coming out of the data including developing.
  • scales, survey instruments, and data collection strategies.
  • Collaborate with research team to design and analyze surveys.
  • Conceptualize and carry out statistical analyses of cross-sectional and panel survey data.
  • Prepare analytic/integrative summaries of findings.
  • Collaborate with the research team on analysis of findings.
  • Collaborate on the development of a new research paradigm for understanding civic, public and political life among young adults.
  • Collaborate with the research team on write-up of findings for publications.
  • Participate in conference presentations.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Maintains recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Has general awareness in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Masters degree inn Political Science, Communications, Sociology, Public Policy, Psychology, or a related field.

Experience:
  • Advanced knowledge of survey research methods (including survey design and weighting) and statistical methods.
  • Expertise using R, especially tidyverse and RMarkdown. This is especially relevant as the GenForward research team uses R for analysis, visualization, and production of materials including toplines documents and slide decks. Experience using GitHub and R Shiny-or a willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with literature on race and ethnicity, political participation, and public opinion.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively and exercise independent judgment, based on
    understanding of overall goals of the research and relevant theory.
