Description
This position is responsible for a broad range of administrative, teaching, research and clinical
activities essential to the development and operation of the Department's Geriatrics Program. In addition, this position will work closely with the Residency Program Directors for teaching
activities as they develop throughout the department.
 Examples of Duties
I. TEACHING (30%)
A. Supervise residents and medical students in patient care activities at the Center for
Family Medicine.
B. Conduct teaching rounds on hospitalized patients.
C. Provide teaching and modeling to fellows, residents and medical students on the
principles, benefits and core concepts of interdisciplinary team care for frail
geriatric patients with complex needs.
D. Work with geriatric interdisciplinary team members to define key outcomes
expected from interdisciplinary care (i.e. Maintenance of function, decreased falls
and delirium, fewer Foley catheters and inappropriate medication, decreased LOS
fewer admissions in 30 days, increased patient and family satisfaction, infection
control, etc.).
E. Actively precept as teaching physician in the resident outpatient clinics to include
patient care aspects and procedural skills, time management skills, doctor-patient
relationship, professionalism, ethical and legal considerations, billing and coding.
F. Set foundation and structure for possible Geriatric Fellowship Program.
II. SERVICE (40%)
A. Serve as Consultant for Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine referral clinic and the
Geriatric Interdisciplinary Assessment clinic.
B. Works collaboratively with other departments within the SIU SOM to enhance the
care of geriatric patients.
C. Participate in special clinics such as the Frailty Clinic, Falls Clinic, Bone Density
Clinic, etc.
D. Participate in teaching service rounds a minimum of five weeks per year and family
medicine call.
E. Conduct nursing home rounds with residents and participate in assisted living
rounds with the Geriatric team as needed.
F. Provide emergency services to patients as needed including those who are identified
as having no primary care physician.
G. Attendance/presentation at national professional meetings.
H. Serve on the Center-wide Committees, as assigned.
I. Serve on school and department committees, as assigned.
E. Participate in community outreach projects.
F. Attend faculty meetings and resident conferences.
G. Participate in Center Peer Review and Quality Improvement activities.
III. ADMINISTRATION (25%)
A. Serve as Division Director of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine.
B. Administer the Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Programs and set priorities for
providers and staff assigned to these programs.
C. Work with Geriatric Team to provide oversight over all Geriatric curriculum
development, implementation and evaluation.
D. Recommend policies and procedures and quality control procedures for the
Geriatric Program.
E. Work collaboratively with affiliated hospitals and the Department of Internal
Medicine to develop and expand Geriatric programs and services.
F. Work with Geriatric Team to provide oversight over all Geriatric and Palliative
Care curriculum development, implementation and evaluation.
G. Serve as Medical Director for affiliated nursing homes.
H. Identify, implement and model "best practices" in the field of Geriatric medicine.
I. Supervise the Geriatric Program's faculty, advanced practice professionals and
staff.
J. Liaison with the Division of General Internal Medicine for resident rotations and
faculty involved in palliative care.
IV. RESEARCH (5%)
A. Contribute to the identification and implementation of appropriate research
projects and publications in the area of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and
Clinical Epidemiology
B. Per RRC requirements, must complete a minimum of 2 scholarly activities
every 5 years.
 Qualifications

1. Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine
2. Must be licensed in the State of Illinois to practice medicine
3. Current certification in Geriatrics from ABFM or ABIM.
4. Three years of experience in geriatric medicine, program development and
education, scholarly activity and career commitment to academic geriatric
medicine.
5. Able to provide leadership, vision and innovation to continuous process
improvement in the care of geriatric patients and interdisciplinary team care.
6. Experience providing services to multicultural populations
7. Experience dealing with underrepresented minority populations
8. Sensitive to the needs of minority populations
