Summary of Position

Emergency Vehicle Technician is responsible for the complete installation of emergency warning products and equipment into emergency and utility vehicles, including the programming and testing of installed equipment while ensuring compliance with Company policies/procedures including safety and environmental regulations.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install emergency warning equipment and products according to prints, assembly drawings, process documents and other job requirement sheets.
  • Conduct basic programming of installed equipment, test functionality and perform troubleshooting when needed.
  • Assess the quality of each vendor-supplied or manufactured part and/or assembly used, inspecting for flaws in its manufacture and functionality and report any such flaws to immediate Supervisor.
  • Monitor stock of supplies for each workstation; participate in keeping common areas clean such as break room and walkways.
  • Follow all safety and departmental rules; including the use of all required Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, following basic housekeeping procedures.
  • Complete all required paperwork and/or vehicle documentation records as needed. (Build hours log, timecards, etc.)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Remove and install body panels, bumpers, and trim of vehicles to be able to perform install
  • Install all cages and partitions K-9, Prisoner Transport & all others
  • Install upfit equipment such as Back Racks, Tommy Gates, Toolboxes etc
  • At time of install tech is to review the build sheet and match it up with all parts to be installed before installation is to begin to verify all the correct needed parts are there before they start
  • When install is completed, their vehicle needs to be road ready for pickup such as (all garbage, wires, tools, cleaning supplies need removed from the vehicle and the exterior should be clean and clear of all handprints or any other debris).
  • At the end of your shift, you are to clean and store your tools in their appropriate assigned location so that they are ready to be used at the start of the next shift.
  • Participate in all training that is required by Federal Signal and the evip department
  • When all the wire spool is used on a wire cart you are responsible to put a new roll onto the cart, if we are low or out you are to let the Pars Coordinator know to order more.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills Requirements:

  • Intermediate knowledge of automotive electrical systems & vehicle wiring

    • Ability to operate power tools and hand tools (drill, wrench, nail gun, staple gun, gauge, vise, etc.) as required.
    • Mechanical aptitude, attention to detail and sound judgment required.
    • Attention to detail a must with mechanical aptitude.
    • Ability to communicate well with others
    • Ability to work on and see colored small objects
    • Must be mechanically inclined to disassemble mechanical parts for all types of vehicles
    • Use of good judgment and knowledge acquired to perform custom fabrication
    • Must be innovative and willing to learn in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing, walking, climbing 10-12ft ladder, bending and stretching around under and inside vehicles, able to lay inside the trunk of vehicles for long periods of time, crawling, kneeling, awkward posturing....
