Job Summary:
This role recruits and evaluates freshman and transfer applicants to support Northwestern's undergraduate enrollment goals, exercising discretion in the review of confidential admission materials. As a member of the Admissions Office's academic programming & partnerships team, you will manage outreach and communications to various external partners and coordinate on-campus programing, with a focus on college counselors. Serving a regional admissions territory, this position plans and implements strategic recruitment practices, both long-term and short-term, and provides detailed and nuanced counseling to students, families, and counselors. You will join a collaborative, student-centered staff who celebrate innovative approaches in higher ed, and who find joy and pride in admissions work.
Specific Responsibilities:
Manage a regional recruitment territory. Plan and execute outreach activities to meet University enrollment goals and University strategic plan. Develop, implement and assess strategic recruitment by targeting schools, programs, and students within territory. Build and maintain productive working relationships with college counselors and community-based organizations (CBOs) to establish a successful recruitment campaign. Track, evaluate and report relevant recruitment statistics. Organize high school visits, college nights, on-campus events and other strategic recruitment events. Out-of-town travel 3-5 weeks in the fall with other local and out-of-town travel as assigned.
Lead on-campus information sessions as on-duty director in visitors center on rotational basis. Answer student/family queries by phone, email, and in person.
As member of admission committee, read, evaluate and render an admission decision for a minimum of 1,800 freshman and transfer applications. Apply independent judgment by interpreting institutional priorities during the application evaluation process to determine applicant admission to the freshman and transfer class. Must exercise independent judgment to interpret and apply University admissibility standards to meet enrollment targets. Plan and organize reading targets to meet deadlines.
As member of the Admissions Office's academic programming & partnerships team, manage outreach communications and engagement with college counselors across online and email platforms (i.e. counselor hub on Admissions website, counselor email updates & newsletters, etc.); print mail; and on-campus settings (welcome packet, etc.), partnering with Admissions Communications Team and other functional-area teams where appropriate.
Support planning, programming, and communications for counselor advisory board.
Coordinate on-campus and virtual programming for college counselors.
Help coordinate on-campus and virtual programming for prospective students in partnership with undergraduate schools and other academic-adjacent offices.
Liaise with various partners on and off campus, including undergraduate school staff and faculty; summer program staff & faculty; and alumni volunteers. Help manage email communications & correspondence where appropriate.
Other admissions duties as assigned.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
Strong speaking/communication skills and ability to speak effectively before audiences of up to 500 or more.
Ability to work effectively with time and volume pressures. Must be able to meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate inclusively with diverse Northwestern community including admission staff, students/families, counselors, and alumni.
Ability to meet department and university goals.
Ability to work outside normal business hours including evening and weekends.
Requires independent judgment, discretion and diplomacy.
