Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
The Department of English at Northern Illinois University (NIU) is creating a pooled posting for anticipated openings as it seeks full-time or part-time instructors to teach face-to-face classes in the first-year composition program.

The load for full-time instructors is usually 12 credit hours per semester and would normally include the first and second semester first-year writing requirements as well as potential to teach developmental writing. This position has occasional opportunities to teach upper-level classes as well-depending on candidates' specializations. The appointment is for one year subject to program needs but is renewable. Instructors are on continuing contracts after 5 years of positive programmatic reviews and continued program need.

NIU's commitment to diversity includes a thriving Office of Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, six cultural resource centers, and six academic diversity centers. NIU is a 2021 recipient of Insight into Diversity magazine's Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award and an AACU Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus. NIU draws its predominately first-generation students and transfers from the cities of Chicago and Rockford, their suburbs, and the rural areas of the region. The English department actively seeks qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of our faculty and campus.
