at University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, United States
Job Description
DepartmentBSD MED - Cardiology
About the Department
The Section of Cardiology was founded in 1950 and has a proud history. We are now charting a new course that will propel us to the forefront of cardiovascular medicine. The strength of the Section reflects the quality and dedication of its faculty, trainees and support staff and is enhanced by the rich environment at the University of Chicago.
Job Summary
The Staff Scientist who serves as Director, Basic Research in Cardiology, and Training Director, Basic Cardiovascular Sciences, will oversee all operations involving the basic science activities of the division of Cardiology.
Responsibilities
- Oversees all operations involving the basic science activities of the Section of Cardiology.
- Patches clamp measurements in isolated cells such as cardiac myocytes and neuronal cells as required to fulfill the research goals of PIs with both funded and unfunded projects involving these techniques.
- Maintains molecular techniques, and shared equipment and expertise, for all PIs in the division so that training and maintenance for all equipment is upheld.
- Establishes and maintains a confocal microscopy-based intracellular calcium imaging facility. Ensures all users have met all training and safety standards, training all users in the safest and most appropriate use if the instrument so that it will both achieve the research goals required for each PI and work at peak efficiency for all users throughout its expected lifetime (up to 20 years).
- Develops collaborations with the cardiac genetics faculty to establish a major effort to tie patient-based diseases to underlying genetic mutations so that further basic science studies (patch clamp, induced pluripotent stem cell line generation, and genetic manipulators with such techniques as CrisprCas9) can be explored in the attempt to define molecular mechanisms and potential treatments using the most up-to-date approaches.
- Organizes a program for the harvesting of human hearts that are unsuitable for transplant for both normal hearts (usually exceeding the age threshold for transplant) as well as failing hearts in order to establish a tissue repository of both normal and diseased tissues which can then be used to verify molecular results from animal studies. This approach has an enormous impact on providing the necessary validation for animal research, thus having the two-fold benefit of validating the conclusions of the animal study itself as well as providing the ethical basis for the use of animals in biomedical research in general.
- Develops the training program of both basic scientists as well as the clinical fellows in Cardiology who wish to pursue basic research as part of their fellowship and/or as a future career goal to incorporate basic research in a future academic career.
- Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.
- Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for research.
- Performs other related work as needed.
