The Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Research Scientist, working in Professor Jeff McMahon's lab and with Associate Professor Clarence Chang. The primary responsibility for this position involves development and fabrication of superconducting detectors using the Pritzker Nanofabrication Facility (PNF). Duties will include device design, fabrication, testing, publication of results, and working with and supporting the training of students. The Research Scientist is expected to give public presentations at conferences and help prepare grants and reports on their research.

The Research Scientist will have opportunities to collaborate more broadly within Simons Observatory and other CMB projects. This work could involve instrument development, instrument testing, calibration, and data analysis.

The expected start date is autumn 2025. The appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extending it by up to two additional years if necessary to complete the project.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

• A PhD in physics, astrophysics, electrical engineering, or a related discipline;

• Experience with process development and fabrication of superconducting detectors ;

• Experience testing detectors at millikelvin temperatures

• Three or more years of postdoctoral experience.
