Job Description
DescriptionThe Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Research Scientist, working in the Climate Systems Engineering initiative (CSEi) with Professor B. B. Cael. The primary responsibilities for this position include (1) developing genome-scale metabolic models of marine microbes embedded within biogeochemical global circulation models; (2) developing reinforcement learning approaches to modeling the dynamics of marine microbial metabolism and physiology; and (3) evaluating the sensitivity of the marine carbon cycle to changes in microbial processes associated with Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement and Ocean Acidification. The research scientist will contribute to CSEi activities and prepare reports and presentations.
Expected project length is 3 years. This position has an expected start date on or around October 1, 2025

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- A PhD in oceanography or related field.
- At least three years of postdoctoral experience.
- Experience with modeling marine microbial metabolism and physiology.
- Experience with genome-scale metabolic network reconstruction.
- Experience with constrained optimization including linear and quadratic programming.
- Experience with high-performance computing.
- Proficiency in marine microbiology and biogeochemistry.
- Proficiency in Matlab, Python, Julia, unix/linux.
