Job Summary
To perform skilled mechanical work on automotive vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment, construction type equipment and other various types of equipment used by the various sections and departments within the University.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Changes oil and filters on cars, trucks, and other equipment as assigned.
- Washes and greases cars, trucks and other equipment as assigned. These vehicles must be picked up and returned from their assigned parking spaces across the campus.
- Checks/replaces batteries, tires, water, oil, gasoline, and windshield washer reservoir. Also changes, rotates and repairs tires.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments as needed to electrical system, wheel bearing adjustment, wheel balance, etc.
- Dispenses fuel at Garage and operates fuel truck to dispense fuel at locations across campus.
- In the absence of dispatch personnel, dispatches vehicles to Car Pool patrons.
- Performs service calls on disabled vehicles and returns them to the Garage for repairs if needed.
- Cleans and repairs tools and equipment as needed.
- Assists with mechanical and body repair work, as necessary
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Seasonal weather extremes are faced on occasion. Exposure to sun, wind, cold, heat, dampness, snow and ice can be expected on these occasions. Carbon monoxide from running engines is present in the shop area. Anyone sensitive to carbon monoxide might find this to be a problem in his or her ability to do this type of work.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Possession of a valid driver's license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of Campus Garage preventive maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of carpool dispatch procedures
- Keeps garage work area clean
- Receives verbal and written instructions, with the expectation of performing the work with minimum supervision.
- Must be capable of making repairs on a large variety of types of vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to work around various chemicals
- Ability to climb on ladders and various pieces of equipment
- Must know and follow the guidelines for Spill Prevention, Control, and cleanup, and dealing with biohazards and hazardous chemicals.
The Automotive Technician Assistant is a 100% full-time Civil Service position and is appointed on a 12-month basis. The hourly rate of pay for this position is $21.00. The schedule for this position includes: Schedules Rotate Every 3 Months - 2 groups will be scheduled Monday through Friday with 1 Group working weekends, rotating every 3 months. 6 months on Monday through Friday, 3 months on weekends.
