Administrative Assistant

at Legal Aid Chicago (Formerly LAF) in Chicago, Illinois, United States

Job Description

Legal Action Chicago is a close partner with Legal Aid Chicago, the Midwest’s largest provider of free  civil legal services to people who are living in poverty. We work closely with the advocates at Legal Aid  Chicago and with community groups to identify the most pressing policy and systemic issues affecting  low-income families, with a special focus on racial equity. We litigate class actions, pursue legislative and administrative initiatives, and undertake other forms of community-based policy advocacy to  effect systemic changes. Learn more about our work at www.legalactionchicago.org.

Our work is not limited to one issue area or advocacy method. For example, Legal Action Chicago has  used a variety of litigation and policy advocacy tools to tackle issues ranging from harmful public  housing rent policies to protection of family finances from creditors to protecting people in abusive  relationships and much more. Our work spans the subject matter of all of Legal Aid Chicago’s practice groups (Children & Families, Consumer, Housing, Immigrants & Workers’ Rights, Pro Bono & Community Partnerships, and Public Benefits), and we welcome applicants who have cross-cutting interests and experiences.

Legal Action Chicago has a small staff of four attorneys plus government relations contractors. It  purchases all “back office” functions from Legal Aid Chicago. But it has a growing need for  administrative capacity, including record-keeping, development activities, social media, and  calendar maintenance. It is a collegial and cooperative atmosphere and a “hybrid” approach allowing a substantial portion of work time to be remote.

Position: Legal Action Chicago seeks a part-time (60%) Administrative Assistant. The position could expand to more time as the organization grows.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the organization’s internal calendar of meetings, deadlines, registrations, contracts and subscriptions and organize corresponding records and documents
  • Help to organize and conduct convenings or events
  • Assist with development activities, including grant obligations, renewals, fundraising letters and records, and donor communications. Opportunities for grant-writing experience
  • Manage social media posting and other external communications
  • Consult and work collaboratively with Legal Aid Chicago staff, interns, and volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned

Salary and Benefits:

The budgeted salary range for this position is $26,143.80-$29,427.60, which reflects 0-10 years of paid, credited experience.

Legal Action Chicago offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, effective the first day of employment
  • Time Off: 15 vacation days and 18 sick days accrued within the first year of employment
  • 19 paid holidays, including four (4) floating holidays
  • Twelve weeks of Paid Parental Leave at 100% of the salary after six months of employment
  • 403(b) retirement plan with an employer contribution after one year of employment
  • $50,000 Basic Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance, at no cost
  • Access to Employee Assistance Program resources, at no cost
