Job Description

Carpenter's Place, a local faith-based not-for-profit organization, has an opening for a part time Truck Driver/Assistant at Carpenter's Corner - Rural. This position will carry out all transportation operations within the Donation Department, including, but not limited to, creating a positive work environment, working alongside a Donation Truck Driver, moving donated furniture and other items from donor's home, distributing the donated product to Carpenter's Corner, while in compliance with company policies, procedures, and the mission statement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  1. Work alongside the Donation Truck Driver daily, being a team player, and being an example of a positive employee to all staff and donors, ensuring a positive environment.
  2. Work with the Donation Truck Driver to load and unload furniture and other donated items on and off a straight box truck, with careful attention, to ensure that people are not injured, Carpenter's Corner property and donor's homes or business is not damaged, donated items are not damaged, and space in the truck is properly utilized.
  3. Assist the Donation Truck Driver in keeping the trucks cab and cargo box neat and organized and uncluttered on a daily basis, in order to provide a safe and clean working environment.
  4. Follow company policy, and follow the instruction of the Donation Truck Driver on a daily basis, in order to have a well-equipped and trained team.
  5. Work with the Donation Truck Driver to safely operate the truck lift gate and other furniture moving equipment (2-wheel dolly, 4-wheel dolly, tie down straps, and other) as needed during the workday to help provide safety and team work.
  6. Assist the Donation Truck Driver whenever he needs you to get out of the truck and assist with backing up and making sure the path is clear of hazards (people, pets, other vehicles, tree limbs, power lines, building, etc.) in order to establish a safe working environment.
  7. Provides friendly and welcoming hospitality to all donors during all steps of the donation pick-up process.
  8. Treats all donors and their homes or offices with the utmost level of respect during donation pick-ups as well as effectively communicates gratitude to all donors, on behalf of Carpenter's Corner.
  9. Reports any significant on-the-job personal injuries within 24 hours and promptly reports all significant accidents or team-member injuries, to keep the Backroom Manager and Store Manager informed and to assure that the correct protocol is taken.
  10. Help evaluate the condition of donated items based on the donation guidelines set by Carpenter's Corner assuring that the store is receiving a quality product and that our donors are treated graciously.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Must have physical strength and bodily health to move heavy furniture items and work in/on a truck and/or in a warehouse setting.
  2. Ability to use cell phones, GPS, and tablets.
  3. Basic ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  4. Ability to read (in English), comprehend, analyze, and interpret.
  5. Must be a person with a willing attitude and have a servant's heart.
  6. Must be committed to the Carpenter's Corner Mission.
  7. Ability to read and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  8. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written and oral form

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED required.


PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Stand, walk, move furniture 60% of the time.

Sit as a passenger in the cab of the truck 25% of the time.

Use hand to type-using a tablet or computer 10% of the time.

Use hands to handle documents 55 of the time.

Lifting and bending up to 75% of the time

Talk and hear all day


WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Truck cab with heat & A/C as needed.
  2. Truck cargo area with open cargo door (outdoor conditions) as needed.
  3. Warehouse with heat in winter, fan ventilation in summer-as needed.
  4. In and around homes, businesses, churches (driveways, sidewalks, grass, steps, porches, living or work areas, some stairs or elevators) as needed.
  5. Outdoor conditions in all types of weather (hot, cold, rain, snow) as long as conditions are safe as needed.

LIFTING REQUIREMENTS

Up to 100 pounds 10-20% of the time.

Up to 50 pounds 40-50% of the time.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL

Heavy physical activity including lifting, carrying, and moving large furniture items-followed by periods of alert mental activity while being a passenger in the straight box truck.


WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS

For Part-Time Monday - Saturday, maximum of 28 hours per week. Attendance at specific meetings or off-site events or training may be required.
