Job Description

The Assistant Dean for Student Success at Illinois Wesleyan University will be responsible for monitoring key enrollment-based data to ensure institutional retention, persistence and completion enrollment goals are met. Using best practices from research, the Assistant Dean will incorporate data-driven and trend-analysis intervention strategies toward student success for target students, particularly students at-risk of stopping out based on the data.   This leader will be expected to incorporate persistence, retention, and completion management best practices into the vision, strategy, and practices of the department.   This is a full time, 12 month, on-campus position.  Generous benefits include health, retirement, considerable time off and access to multiple tuition programs for employees and dependents.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Programs:  Develops, directs and assesses institution-wide student success initiatives and services designed to increase student persistence, academic goal completion, and graduation rates. Collaborates with the Director of the Writing Center and other tutoring sites to develop supplemental instruction for high DFW courses.
  • Coordinates with appropriate offices to support probation, suspended, or leave students with clear pathways to success.
  • Policy:  Pursues changes to policies and practices that create access for students and promote student retention, persistence, and graduation, ensuring that the needs of all students are met.
  • Assessment:  Retention is a critical part of enrollment growth at IWU.  This position is responsible for evaluating and assessing outcomes of student success and retention initiatives based on mutually developed goals and outcomes.  Collaborates with admissions and institutional effectiveness to gather and use predictive analytics and assessment tools to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities related to enrollment and academic success, and develop strategies to address them.  Monitors enrollment reports that include incoming and overall student data to identify key trends for intervention.
  • Supervision:  The assistant dean will supervise Academic Advising, Accessibility Services, and the Center for Engaged Learning and collaborate across divisions to support student success and retention.  Oversees recruitment, management, professional development, and retention of direct reports and staff. Will develop a plan for tutoring and data collection on interventions.
  • On-campus partnerships and collaboration:  This position works collaboratively with academic affairs, student affairs, enrollment affairs, athletics, advising, financial aid, and other key offices that support retention efforts.
  • Committee work includes: convenes the Retention Leadership Team (Provost, VPSA, VPEM, AVP/Institutional Effectiveness); develops organizational structure involving collaborative partners to address strategic enrollment initiatives. Work closely with CETAL and the Thorpe Center in developing faculty development for changing demographics of students. 
  • Stays abreast of current research, trends, and best practices in student success, retention, and persistence and integrates them into departmental planning and programming.
