Job Description

Non-Medical In Home Caregiver

JOB SUMMARY:

The caregiver provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADL), housekeeping, personal laundry, companionship, and other tasks as identified, to an individual in his/her own home, assisted living facility, skilled nursing facility, or other location

Services are focused on providing assistance that is not medical in nature, but is based upon assisting the client in meeting the demands of living life to the fullest extent possible

The caregiver will provide services in accordance with the policies, procedures and requirements of Friends Over Fifty Senior Care, as well as the service arrangements spelled out in the Client Care Plan.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year experience in a health care setting is desirable
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License
  • Valid proof of Illinois car insurance
  • Able to speak, read, write, and comprehend English
  • Able to pass FRIENDS OVER FIFTY SENIOR CARE requirements for background check and fingerprinting
  • Knowledge of computers is helpful
  • CPR Certification may be required

 

SKILLS:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective organizational / record keeping skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection control, safety, confidentiality, personnel policy, and programs as outlined in Policy & Procedure Manual
  • Exercise sound judgment with clients, families, and Friends Over Fifty Senior Care personnel
  • General housekeeping
  • Ability to maintain a safe environment
  • Fire hazard awareness

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Assistance with household chores, including cooking and meal preparation, cleaning, and laundry
  • Assistance in completing activities such as shopping and appointments outside of the home
  • Companionship
  • Completion of appropriate records documenting service provision
  • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’s) and personal care
  • Assistance with transfer
  • Medication reminding
  • Completing training as directed

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA & JOB HAZARDS:

  • Hours of work are structured in blocks and are subject to irregular hours of work based on departmental needs or demands
  • Employee is required to be able to work in a temperature-controlled environment, which may not include air conditioning during the summer months; and spend 80% or more of the time indoors
  • Position may require duties to include routine or reasonably anticipated tasks or procedures where there is a degree of actual or potential exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials

 

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Moderate physical effort required; normally seated or standing with freedom of movement on a regular basis, handling light materials and supplies
  • Some lifting may be required
  • Lifting more than twenty-five (25) pounds is expressly forbidden
  • Employee must be able to impart and receive detailed information through verbal and written communication
  • Employee must be able to work in situations involving measurable or verifiable criteria, situations dealing with a diverse group of people, performing under stressful situations, and working with set limits, tolerances or standards

 

 

SPECIAL JOB CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Requires some travel
  • Stair climbing
  • Lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds but not exceeding same
  • May be exposed to hazardous material and life-threatening diseases

 

The caregiver receives direct instruction and follows prescribed procedures. End results are clearly defined, and the Office Manager and the Care Coordinator oversee and frequently reviews work.
