at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, United States

Job Description

Serve as the organization’s lead scientist to drive and promote participation in multi-organizational efforts to conserve freshwater ecosystems and freshwater species survival, with emphasis on North and Central American ecosystems. Under the direction of the Shedd Aquarium’s VP of Conservation Research and working closely with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC), its Freshwater Conservation Committee (FCC), relevant government and NGO stakeholders, and the wider conservation community, utilize advanced scientific knowledge of freshwater ecosystems to participate in implementing the IUCN Assess-Plan-Act model to assess extinction risks, identify conservation needs, help plan effective and coordinated measures, and mobilize action to promote freshwater species survival. Compile and analyze current scientific research on specific freshwater ecosystems and species status and support assessments to help inform species conservation prioritization for freshwater systems and taxa (e.g., IUCN Red List Assessments, Key Biodiversity Area identification, National Assessments). Help expand the understanding of conservation needs of freshwater systems by synthesizing scientific knowledge and preparing and delivering reports to various audiences, including scientific and conservation conferences, conservation partner meetings, media and public forums.
