Job Description

Job Goal: Work within the school and community setting, under the direction of the classroom teacher, to Amergisize students’ learning; academic, behavioral, functional, and social/ emotional and to foster student participation in all school related activities.

Qualifications:

1. Professional Educator License with Stipulations issued by ISBE endorsed as para professional. (Licensure requirements:

1. At least 19 years of age

2. One of the Following:

3. Associate’s degree or higher

4. 60 semester hours of coursework

5. High School Diploma and passingscore on the ACT Workkeys

6. Some sign language ability and interest in improving signing skill. (SigningTeaching Assistants only).

7. Physical ability to be trained and perform physical management techniques with fidelity.

8. Valid Driver’s License and ability to obtain Illinois Secretary of State Licensure to transport students within 3 months of hire. (Southeast Alternative teacher assistants).

Duties and Responsibilities: *Nothing in this job description restricts management’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.

1. Monitorand assist students in their daily routines across all school and community settings.

2. Provide individual or small group instruction under the teacher’s supervision.

3. Provide academic supportat the student’s academic level.

4. Accompany students and provide academic and/or behavioral support in inclusion settings.

5. Communicate with students at the student’s level and according to the needs of the student.

6. Demonstrate a positiveattitude toward students.

7. Assist students with bathroom/hygiene needs according to teacher request or needs of student; use appropriate sanitation during these activities.

8. Support individual student’s therapy program as directed by related services staff and/or classroom teacher including data collection.

9. Provide active student supervision including but not limited to: bus duty, community outings, playground, lunchroom, and passing periods.

1. Follow through on behavioral programs including individual behavior intervention plans and crisis plans,including but not limitedto: reinforcement, non-violent crisis intervention, data collection, modeling, and physical management.

2. Assist students onto and intotransportation to and from school and during the school day, including buckling of seat belts and/or harnesses.

3. Demonstrate care for, correct use of, and maintenance of equipment, materials and school property.

4. Assist students with the use and care of adaptive equipment.

5. Develop classroom materials including but not limited to cutting, typing,copying, laminating, utilizing propriety software.

6. Assist in maintaining a clean, orderlylearning environment.

7. Demonstrate commitment to the safety of students by maintaining a safe environment and knowledge of emergency procedures.

8. Work in a professional manner with all staff; SASEDand district personnel.

9. Participate in specialized trainingas requested by the programadministrator.

10. Participate as requested in team planning meetings or IEP meetings.

11. Ability to travelduring the day to anotherSASED site.

12. Take appropriate initiative when no specific task is assigned.

13. Follow through with classroom teacher routines and procedures.

Terms of Employment: Up to 179 day work year at compensation set by the SASED Board of Directors.

1. Standing/Walking: Abilityto stand and walk for extended periods,up to 4-6 hours per day.

2. Sitting: Ability to sit forup to 2-4 hours during instruction or meetings.

3. Lifting/Carrying: Ability to lift and carry upto 50 pounds and assiststudents as needed.

4. Reaching/Grasping: Abilityto reach, grasp, and handlematerials and classroom equipment.

5. Bending/Stooping: Abilityto bend or kneel toassist students and retrieve materials.

6. Vision/Hearing/Speaking: Abilityto see, hear, and communicate effectively with students and staff.

7. Dexterity: Ability to write,type, and use teaching tools and technology.

8. Student Assistance: Ability to support studentswith physical needsor disabilities.

9. Emotional Stamina: Ability to maintain focusand emotional regulation in a dynamic classroom environment.
