Job Description

This role focuses on assembling low and medium voltage electrical switchgear cabinets from start to finish. You will interpret blueprints and work orders, gather the correct materials and hardware, and use hand and power tools to build modular steel cabinets and copper bus assemblies. You will also perform basic inspections to ensure each product meets quality standards and is built accurately and safely.

Responsibilities

+ Interpret assembly and elevation drawings to understand build requirements and sequence of operations.

+ Construct modular steel cabinets and copper bus assemblies according to blueprints and work instructions.

+ Read and use a tape measure accurately to lay out, cut, and align components.

+ Select and gather appropriate materials, hardware, and components based on work orders and blueprints.

+ Use manual hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers to assemble mechanical components.

+ Operate power tools including drills, impact tools, pneumatic torque wrenches, power drills, saws, and grinders to complete assembly tasks.

+ Use shop equipment safely and correctly to support fabrication, wiring, and assembly activities.

+ Follow wiring diagrams and schematics as needed to ensure proper routing and placement of components.

+ Perform basic inspections of completed assemblies to verify quality, accuracy, and adherence to specifications.

+ Apply basic math, including fractions and decimals, when measuring, cutting, and aligning parts.

+ Follow written and verbal work instructions in English to ensure consistent and correct assembly.

+ Maintain a clean and organized work area and handle tools and equipment responsibly.

+ Collaborate with team members across fabrication, welding, wiring, and assembly to complete projects efficiently.

+ Identify issues during assembly and communicate them promptly, contributing to problem solving and continuous improvement.

+ Manage time effectively to meet production schedules and productivity expectations while maintaining quality.

Essential Skills

+ At least 2 years of experience as a Mechanical Assembler, Machine Builder, Automotive Mechanic, or similar role in a job shop environment rather than a high-volume assembly line.

+ Proven ability to interpret assembly drawings, elevation drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics.

+ Knowledge of electrical symbols and schematics sufficient to understand and follow technical documentation.

+ Proficiency using manual hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and other common hand tools.

+ Experience using power tools including drills, impact tools, pneumatic torque wrenches, power drills, saws, and grinders.

+ Ability to use shop equipment safely and effectively in a fabrication and assembly environment.

+ Capability to read a tape measure accurately and apply precise measurements in both standard and metric units as needed.

+ Strong mechanical assembly skills, including construction, framing, and fitting of components.

+ Basic math skills, including working with fractions and decimals, to support accurate measurements and calculations.

+ Ability to read, write, and converse fluently in English at a level that supports understanding of work instructions, safety information, and effective communication with coworkers.

+ Demonstrated commitment to producing quality work and following established processes and standards.

+ Effective time management and productivity skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a production environment.

+ Sound judgment and problem-solving skills to address issues that arise during assembly and make appropriate decisions.

+ Clear and effective communication skills to work closely with team members and other departments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ High School Diploma or Technical School education preferred but not required.

+ Experience with mechanical assembly in environments involving fabrication, welding, wiring, and final assembly.

+ Familiarity with carpentry-related tasks such as framing and construction, including the use of saws and other cutting tools.

+ Experience with automotive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, demonstrating hands-on mechanical aptitude.

+ Ability to interpret and follow detailed blueprints and work instructions consistently.

+ Comfort working with wiring diagrams and schematics in an industrial or manufacturing setting.

+ Demonstrated integrity and ethics, aligning work behavior with organizational vision, mission, and values.

+ Strong customer focus, with an understanding of how quality and reliability impact end users.

Work Environment

You will work in a clean, modern, and well-maintained manufacturing facility with approximately 60 employees. The operation manages the full production process in-house, including fabrication, welding, wiring, and assembly, giving you exposure to a wide range of processes and equipment. The facility is designed for comfort, with controlled and comfortable temperatures that support year-round work. You will regularly use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment, including wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, drills, impact tools, pneumatic torque wrenches, power drills, saws, grinders, and measuring tools such as tape measures. The environment is production-focused yet collaborative, where teams work together to complete complex projects from start to finish while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of St. Charles, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 – $20.00/hr.
