Position Overview
The Corrections Maintenance Craftsman position, located at the Vandalia Correctional Center, will be an integral part of the maintenance team performing journey level maintenance and repair at the facility. The primary role of the Corrections Maintenance Craftsman is to inspect and identify equipment or machines in need of repair and instruct individuals in custody in methods, techniques, and tools of the trade to perform basic maintenance duties on facility buildings and equipment. This position will also relieve the Correctional Maintenance Craftsman assigned to the garage. Essential Functions- Performs maintenace work at journeyman level in the areas of carpentry, masonry, painting, welding, automotive, and heavy equipment work to repair facility buildings, equipment, vehicles, and machinery.
- Supervises the operation of one of the various maintenance repair shops and directs and instructs individuals in custody in methods, techniques, and tools of the trade to perform basic maintenance duties on facility buildings and equipment.
- Gathers information in regards to the proper reporting of Vandalia Correctional Center’s preventative maintenance programs.
- Keeps records and makes reports of materials used on each job.
- Relieves the Correctional Maintenance Craftsman assigned to the garage.
- Performs other duties as required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman in one of the maintenance or automotive repair trades.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience welding, torch cutting, and plasma cutting.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in small engine repair.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with underground fuel storage tanks.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in fencing, masonry, and carpentry work.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in report writing.
- Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.
- Requires a valid, appropriate driver’s license.
- This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567©). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
- Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six months of employment.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
