Job Description

The Bus Mechanic maintains and repairs transit buses, with a focus on electrical systems, diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, air conditioning units, and interior and exterior body work. This role performs hands-on diagnostics and repairs using hand tools and power tools, completes thorough visual inspections before and after work, and documents all completed and pending tasks. The position requires working independently, managing multiple job orders per day, and ensuring buses are safe, reliable, and ready for service.

Responsibilities

+ Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical systems on transit buses, including multiplex systems.

+ Perform minor engine repairs and service transmissions as needed.

+ Carry out routine maintenance such as brake services and oil changes.

+ Inspect, repair, and maintain bus air conditioning units.

+ Perform interior and exterior body work on buses, including minor repairs and adjustments.

+ Use hand tools and power drills to perform mechanical and maintenance tasks safely and efficiently.

+ Conduct thorough visual inspections of each bus before starting work and after completing repairs.

+ Manage and complete up to 10 assigned job orders per day, ensuring all tasks are addressed within the workday.

+ Accurately document all work performed and clearly note any items not completed.

+ Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

+ Collaborate and communicate effectively with team members and on-site personnel at transit facilities.

+ Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of steel toe boots and appropriate work attire.

+ Perform maintenance and repair work in varying weather conditions, including outdoor environments as required.

Essential Skills

+ 2-5 years of experience working on buses or trucks in a maintenance or repair capacity.

+ Hands-on experience using hand tools and power tools for mechanical and maintenance work.

+ Proven ability to perform detailed visual inspections on vehicles before and after repairs.

+ Demonstrated experience diagnosing electrical systems, including multiplex systems.

+ Strong troubleshooting skills in diesel maintenance, brakes, transmissions, and general automotive repair.

+ Ability to work independently, manage multiple job orders, and complete daily workloads.

+ Computer skills for documentation and basic use of maintenance-related software or systems.

+ Clear and accurate written documentation skills to record completed and pending work.

+ Comfort working in fleet, truck, or bus maintenance environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Experience working specifically on transit authority buses is a plus.

+ Background with major automotive manufacturers such as Chevy or Ford is beneficial.

+ Technical schooling or formal training in automotive, diesel, or bus technology is preferred.

+ Welding experience is an advantage for body and structural repairs.

+ Previous experience as a bus mechanic, bus technician, or in fleet maintenance is highly valuable.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin Park, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 – $32.00/hr.
