Job Description

Director of Engineering – AI/ML

Reporting to the CTO, perform the following duties:

• Lead, manage, and grow multiple engineering teams of AIML Engineers, Applied AI Engineers, and Data Scientists. Work with internal and external stakeholders to understand desired AIML capabilities, including Generative AI applications and LLM integrations, and prepare technical implementation and delivery roadmaps. Work within and across agile teams to manage the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of technical solutions across full-stack AIML tools and technologies, including model training and serving infrastructure, APIs, data engineering pipelines, MLOps frameworks, and cloud providers. Identify and measure KPIs and lead continuous improvement programs across model performance, accuracy, reliability, deployment efficiency, and project delivery. Establish priorities, set or revise deadlines, and enforce service standards in project executions.
• Provide technical management by leading architects and principal engineers on design reviews of AIML platforms. Approve decisions on technology stacks, databases, data engineering frameworks, and cloud providers for AIML initiatives. Review evaluations of new AIML frameworks, including LLMs such as GPT, Gemini, and BERT, along with MLOps standards, cloud services such as Google Vertex AI, Google Cloud Functions, Google Composer, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), and security protocols to shape the organization's technology strategy for current and future AIML initiatives. Assess emerging technologies to refine the organization's technical direction.
• Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of engineers across AIML teams. Encourage learning, innovation, and implementation of cutting-edge AIML technologies, including Generative AI and LLMs. Where needed, arrange in-person and online technical workshops, bootcamps, and training sessions to enhance team skills in AIML. Approve paid time-offs, performance reviews, and compensation raises for engineers. Perform regular 1:1s with direct reports and provide feedback on the progress of the teams.
• Work with the leadership team to prepare strategy and execution plans for the company's quarterly and annual goals as they relate to AIML initiatives. Effectively communicate the organization's AIML strategy to engineering teams by translating business requirements to technical deliverables. Present the organization's AIML and Generative AI capabilities in new customer acquisition and presales meetings with C-level executives. Represent the organization in technical conferences, meetups, and other external events.
• Direct the design and implementation of CICD and MLOps pipelines to automate the promotion of AIML applications from development to production environments, ensuring efficient deployment processes using Docker, Kubernetes, and Git.
• Assess personnel needs and manage the hiring process for senior AI/ML engineering talent. Plan, implement, and monitor the engineering hiring process. Configure and move engineers to other projects based on requirements, technology stack, experience, and availability.

Require: 

Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent and 5 years experience in the Job offered or any occupation in which the required experience was gained.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent and 7 years experience in the Job offered or any occupation in which the required experience was gained.

Experience to include:  
- Working as an SME and technical lead on the architecture of technical implementations to create reliable and maintainable AI/ML platforms focused on model performance, accuracy, reliability, security, and compliance;
- Designing API services to expose AIML and GenAI endpoints using Python, Java, and FastAPI;
- Building cloud platform infrastructure for AIML services, using Apache Spark, Kafka, Google Vertex AI, Google Cloud Functions, Google Composer, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE); and
- Designing & implementing CICD and MLOps pipelines to automate the promotion of AIML applications and deployment processes using Docker, Kubernetes, and Git.

Various worksites: relocation to project-based unanticipated worksites within USA possible.
