Position Overview
Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to add a journeyman-level carpenter to their Maintenance team located at Big Muddy River Correctional Center. This individual should be able to estimate jobs, materials, and time as well as prioritizing these tasks in accordance with the needs of the facility. They will ensure the duties are completed in a safe and organized manner. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
Essential Functions- Repairs and performs maintenance work on buildings and equipment.
- Performs general carpenter work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, or other similar structures.
- Instructs and supervises in the carpenter shop.
- Instructs helpers and inmates in general carpentry trade tasks and supervises manual workers.
- Builds and erects wood scaffolding or forms needed for concrete construction projects and repair of existing structures.
- Sharpens, maintains, and checks all assigned tools.
- Perform incidental pattern making or cabinet work.
- Obtains job costs, estimates and submits them to the institution’s Stationary Engineer Chief
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those duties
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of work experience performing repairs and/or maintenance on buildings and equipment.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of work experience operating carpentry equipment including but not limited to saws, sanders, lathes, and other power tools.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience constructing scaffolding.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience maintaining an inventory of tools.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience coordinating work with other trades workers including but not limited to painters, bricklayers, plumbers, and/or concrete workers.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience creating cost estimates for carpentry projects.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience supervising others in the performance of carpentry tasks.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience instructing others in the performance of carpentry tasks.
- Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
- This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
