Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Technician 2 for the Hot Shot Crew for the Office of Land Management. This position will use their skills to maintain and repair buildings and site equipment as well as operating and maintaining pool of specialized equipment. This position will provide support and assistance for special projects and perform maintenance duties around the site. • Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of Department buildings and site equipment


• Operates and maintains pool of specialized equipment such as backhoes, tree spakes, stump cutters, boom mowers, brush chippers, farming and construction machinery of greater than 80 HP, and drones (including spraying drones)


• Provides technical support and assistance on special projects for Land Management and the Office of Resource Conservation Divisions (Wildlife Forestry Fisheries and Natural Heritage)


• Operates dump trucks and two ton trucks with air brakes in conjunction with ten ton equipment trailer to transport equipment and supplies


• Performs maintenance duties such as mowing grass, cutting/trimming trees and shrubs, sprays pesticides and herbicides


• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above

• Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery

• Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing


• One (1) year of experience following written and oral instructions


• One (1) year of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations

• Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history


• Requires possession of a valid Class A CDL driver’s license with Air Brakes designation


• Ability to obtain herbicide or pesticide operator’s license


• Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis


• Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, buildings and grounds


• Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds


• Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain


• Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification
