Job Description
Essential Functions
- Maintains all state and interstate highways in an assigned geographical area.
- Makes recommendations for work to be completed at maintenance facilities through the Capital Development Board.
- Determines maintenance deficiencies in an assigned area.
- Corrects maintenance deficiencies through Day Labor projects, Contract Maintenance projects, or district Maintenance forces.
- Directs snow and ice removal and disaster field operations.
- Reviews design plans for construction projects to minimize future maintenance problems.
- Provides technical advice and recommendations to the Operations Engineer.
- Assigns, trains, motivates and evaluates subordinate personnel.
- Performs duties in compliance with the Departmental Safety Rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
- Five years of experience in civil engineering.
- Five years’ experience in the specific area of highway engineering, three years of which should have been supervising engineering functions.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Strong oral and/or written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Extensive districtwide travel with occasional statewide travel, which may include overnight stays.
- Overtime.
- 24-hour/7 days per week call availability.
- Ability to perform outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, inclement weather (hot, cold, wet, muddy, icy), active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
- Successful completion of a background screening.
- Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
- This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.
