Job Description

Position Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Parks & Planning, the Horticulturist is responsible for a variety of park maintenance, turf maintenance, horticulture, forestry and recreation support activities. This is a hands-on position with the majority of time to be spent working in the field. The normal work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the Horticulturist is on-call as needed.

Job Class: Full Time, Non-Exempt, IMRF Eligible

Work Hours: 7:00 am 3:30 pm, M-F. Nights and weekends as needed.

Salary: $22.10 – $24.00 an hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Applies herbicides, fungicides and pesticides to destroy undesirable growth and pests.
Performs ornamental horticulture maintenance which includes, but is not limited to, planting trees, shrubs and flowers and their respective maintenance (i.e. watering, fertilizing, flower bed arrangement/maintenance, etc.) and other horticulture duties, as needed.
Responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of trees, flowerbeds, shrubs, plantings and landscape areas.
Responsible for selection, source identification, ordering, and acquisition of all required plant and seed material including annuals, perennials, and natives.
Cleans and maintains any and all park pavilions, restrooms and other assigned buildings.
Maintains grounds through litter pickup, recycling and other activities.
Maintains all Park District property, trails, paths, roads, parking lots, common sidewalks, and other surfaces, which includes, but is not limited to snow removal, debris removal, grading and light renovation.
Responsible for, but not limited to, managing the safety and cleanliness of property and equipment by identifying, repairing and inspecting park facilities, equipment and property for wear, damage, vandalism, etc.
Responsible for the operation and preventive maintenance of Park District vehicles, tractors, ground equipment. Implements and ensures it is performed and reported. The maintenance may include, but is not limited to daily inspections, washing, checking fluids and any other maintenance as needed.
Organizes, prioritizes and directs multiple projects, labor and equipment needs.
Documents man-hours and materials used on work orders to specific job requirements.
Responsible for inventories and keeping updates for the plant material in all parks as to location, type, size and health.

Demonstrates, leads and supports the Park District’s mission statement, vision and core values.
Establishes, supports and maintains collaborative efforts with internal and external customers and organizations.
Cross trains on all general areas of the Parks & Planning Department and assist in all areas needed.
Maintains a pro-active approach to safety and risk management.
Must adhere to safety policies and procedures as outlined in the safety manual and perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Addison Park District’s safety program.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

May be responsible for supervising part-time or seasonal staff by communicating job expectations, job training, coaching, performance evaluations, recognition, and discipline.
Creates, updates, implements and manages a Districtwide landscape plan and operation’s manual.
Develops and manages the landscape budget and expenses.
Responsible for all horticulture inventory, supplies and tools.
Assists in managing and completing the overall workload of the Parks and Planning Department.
Contact person for various park maintenance operations to park grounds including, but not limited to controlled prairie and wood burns and maintenance.
May assist in repairs damaged recreational items such as tennis court nets, basketball courts, soccer goals, playground equipment and shelters.
Assists in managing the overall workload of the Parks and Planning Department.
Documents work-hours and materials used on work orders to specific job requirements.
Receives quotes from vendors; such as, work to be performed, equipment repairs or purchases, etc. and the time required.
Attend workshops and seminars pertaining to employee’s position, as needed, for new ideas, developments and techniques.
May be required to work special events from time to time at nights and on weekends.
Required Qualifications:

Must have a minimum of an associate degree in Horticulture or related field.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in related field.
Must have a valid Drivers’ License.
Must have a State of Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License within six (6) months of hiring.
Must be CPR and AED certified within six (6) months of hiring.
Competencies:

Ability to follow directions and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
Ability to read and understand materials, such as complex service manuals, maintenance and operators’ manuals printed in English.
Ability to make decisions objectively based on customer service and fiscal constraint.
Ability to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction of the Superintendent of Parks & Planning.
Ability to delegate work, where appropriate, in order to accomplish work most effectively.
Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work.
Ability to work in a team atmosphere, while promoting the Park District’s mission statement, vision and core values.
Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations.
Ability to recognize priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to receive constructive criticism and/or supervision.
Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new situations.
Possess enthusiasm and drive with a desire to accomplish goals and objectives.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Position may be required to work both inside and outside during various environmental conditions, such as, but not limited to rain and mud, hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust, fumes, dirt, and noise.
Position must operate and handle assigned equipment which may include, but is not limited to tractors, heavy equipment, trucks and automotive equipment.
Must have the physical agility to maintain mobility from site to site, and be able to perform moderate manual tasks (a thorough pre-employment physical examination will be required after conditional job offer.)
May perform duties which include, but are not limited to prolonged lifting, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing for extended periods of time.
